University of Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria
Commissioned by an Act of Parliament in 1962, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) occupies a distinctive peninsula campus at Akoka, Yaba, where tidal creeks separate its lecture halls from the frenetic commercial energy of Africa most populous metro area. With annual undergraduate intake around 8,500 and total enrolment surpassing 57,000, UNILAG is one of Nigeria highest-throughput first-generation universities. Its College of Medicine (CMUL), co-located with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), runs active clinical research programmes spanning HIV retrovirology, sickle-cell disease genetics, oncology pharmacology, and maternal mortality reduction strategies. The Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS) anchors UNILAG digital research agenda, including machine learning applied to financial fraud detection, a topic of particular commercial relevance given Lagos status as sub-Saharan Africa fintech capital. The Faculty of Engineering is rated among Nigeria leading schools for petroleum, chemical, and electrical engineering training, and hosts several Shell and Chevron-endowed laboratory units. UNILAG Faculty of Law is widely regarded as a seedbed for Nigeria top commercial litigators and arbitration specialists. Beyond conventional academics, UNILAG operates a technology business incubator that has supported over 50 early-stage ventures. Research funding arrives through Carnegie Corporation grants, DFID instruments, and several EU Horizon partnerships across environmental monitoring and public health data systems.
