Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) is Colombia largest and most distinguished public research university, founded in 1867 and operating eight campuses nationwide, with the main campus in Bogota. UNAL is consistently ranked as Colombia top university in QS World University Rankings, placing in the 501-600 global range, and is one of Latin America most prolific research universities by publication volume. The university enrolls approximately 50,000 students across 98 undergraduate programmes, 121 specialisations, 137 master programmes, and 34 doctoral programmes. UNAL leads Colombia in doctoral-level training, producing over 60% of the country PhDs annually and housing more than 800 research groups formally recognised by Minciencias. Research strengths are particularly pronounced in agronomy and tropical agriculture, biodiversity and conservation biology, petroleum engineering, mathematics, computational chemistry, and public health. UNAL Amazonian and Orinoquian research stations provide unique platforms for tropical ecology and indigenous knowledge research. The university hosts several Colciencias-certified research centres of excellence and maintains joint laboratories with the Colombian Petroleum Institute (ICP-Ecopetrol) in petroleum geosciences and reservoir engineering. International research partnerships span the UK, Germany, France, Brazil, and multiple multilateral development institutions. UNAL produces over 4,000 indexed publications annually.
