Chiang Mai University (CMU) is northern Thailand premier research institution and the nation first provincial university, established in 1964 through the promulgation of the Chiang Mai University Act. As one of nine Thai National Research Universities, CMU operates 17 faculties with 107 departments, 3 colleges, 2 institutes, and a graduate school, making it one of the largest universities in Southeast Asia outside of capital cities. The university employs over 2,000 academic and research staff serving more than 35,000 enrolled students. CMU research infrastructure includes internationally recognized institutes such as the Energy Research and Development Institute-Nakornping (ERDI), the Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHES) which leads HIV/AIDS and infectious disease research hosting major NIH-funded clinical trials, and the Social Research Institute (SRI). CMU Faculty of Agriculture is recognised for contributions to highland crop development, sustainable farming, and ethnobotany. The university has developed strong research programmes in renewable energy, smart city technologies, digital health, and biodiversity conservation. CMU ranks among the top 600 universities globally in QS World University Rankings and maintains active research partnerships with universities in Japan, Australia, the United States, and Europe. The ERDI focuses on solar energy, biomass, and waste-to-energy research relevant to northern Thailand growing renewable energy sector.
