Rafael Yuste is a Spanish-American neuroscientist at Columbia University who is one of the key scientists behind the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), which he helped launch alongside George Church and others in a pivotal 2012 Science paper. Yuste's laboratory pioneered the use of calcium imaging and two-photon microscopy to record the activity of large populations of neurons simultaneously in the intact brain, revolutionizing systems neuroscience methodology. His work on neocortical microcircuits and the dynamic patterns of neural activity across cell ensembles has provided insights into how the brain encodes information and generates behavior. Yuste co-invented the concept of two-photon optogenetics—the ability to both record and control individual neurons using light—enabling all-optical interrogation of neural circuits.
