Zara Ahmed
Biomedical Engineering · King's College London
Zara Ahmed is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at King's College London, supervised by Prof. Julia Gorelik. Her thesis advances scanning ion conductance microscopy techniques to achieve nanometer-resolution topography maps of live cardiomyocyte and vascular smooth muscle cell membranes under physiological stimulation, correlating membrane topology changes with calcium signalling events. Six publications in Nature Biomedical Engineering and ACS Nano document her microscopy system development and cell biology findings. Zara received an EPSRC doctoral training partnership award and completed a six-month industrial secondment at Leica Microsystems' R&D division in Mannheim. She has accepted a senior application scientist role at a medical imaging instrumentation company. Her SICM platform enables the first real-time imaging of T-tubule remodelling in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy models.
